Brett Talbert

Operations Intern

Intern Project
“During my internship at Olympic Steel, my primary focus was improving downtime data collection on the two stamping presses. This involved installing a tracking software on the operator terminals and using that data to implement solutions, decreasing downtime and improving the efficiency of both stamping presses.”

Why did you choose to intern for Olympic Steel?

  • “I chose this internship because of the culture, environment and just how interesting this company is. One thing I love more than anything is learning, and nothing excites me more than the opportunity to make a difference. Olympic gives me an incredible opportunity to do what I love, solve problems, work with complex machinery, meet new people and learn more about engineering in the real world.”

What do you hope to accomplish during your time here at Olympic Steel?

  • “Throughout my short time here at Olympic, I hope to grow my understanding of engineering in a true engineering environment as well as learn as much as possible about the operations and process side of the steel industry. I hope that I can improve the efficiency of the plant, implement new ways of collecting and viewing data, and contribute as much as possible to this company.”

What do you like to do in your free time?

  • “In my free time I love to be outside. Some of my favorite activities are playing soccer, going on hikes, biking, wakeboarding and snowboarding whenever I get the chance. I also love learning about anything relating to science or mechanical engineering and I love to spend as much time as possible with my family.”

What is your proudest moment so far?

  • “My proudest moment so far was winning first place at the pumpkin launch competition at my school. The task was to build a mechanical catapult or trebuchet to launch a pumpkin as far as possible. My team and I spent countless hours researching, building and testing our trebuchet, and our hard work paid off. My favorite part about this competition was coming up with unique and interesting solutions to solve problems and seeing it launch successfully for the first time was one of the greatest feelings.”

What is your favorite quote?

  • “It's supposed to be hard. If it wasn't hard, everyone would do it. The hard... is what makes it great.” -Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks in A League of Their Own)
