In January 1997, Olympic announced the formation of a joint venture with U.S. Steel to process laser welded sheet steel blanks. The joint venture, doing business as Olympic Laser Processing (OLP), is a 50/50 venture. Olympic Steel is the managing partner and focuses on the operational and administrative aspects of the company. U.S. Steel provides sales and technical support for toll processing applications. OLP also provides laser-welded blanks to automotive OEM's as a tier 1 supplier.

Laser welded blanks are used in the automotive industry for a number of body fabrication applications. Demand for laser welded parts has increased dramatically since their introduction, as auto manufacturers sought ways to reduce auto body weight while benefiting from steel’s strength, safety and coating advantages.

The facility is located in Van Buren Township in the Detroit area. The 155,000 square foot facility originally housed two fully automated weld lines. In 2000, OLP purchased and installed two additional weld lines. These lines give OLP the flexibility to take on additional business, while at the same time making their current production more efficient. In 2003, OLP added yet another weld line, manufactured by Soudronics of Switzerland, which provides the latest in laser welding and weld inspection technology. This addition, and the over growth of OLP as a major manufacturer of welded blanks, has positioned the company for continued growth in the future.
