Olympic Steel Hires Director of Process Engineering


Cleveland, Ohio --- (May 8, 2000) David A. Wolfort, Chief Operating Officer of Olympic Steel, Inc. (Nasdaq: ZEUS) announced today that Ilia Geltser has joined the company as Director - Process Engineering and Operations Management. Geltser brings to the newly created position strong technical credentials and over 10 years of business experience.

"Acquiring an individual with Mr. Geltser's qualifications reinforces our commitment to the business strategy that we've initiated with our strategic planning firm over the last year. His extensive experience in business development and consulting in the metals industry will be a tremendous asset for us," stated Mr. Wolfort. Most recently, Geltser served as a consultant in the Metals and Mining Practice for McKinsey & Company. Prior to McKinsey, Geltser worked in Business Development, Technical Services and Operations Management at Allvac, an Allegheny Technologies company. He has worked extensively with domestic and foreign steel producers in strategy development and operational turnarounds.

He received both his first Masters degree and his undergraduate degree in Metal Physics from the Moscow Steel and Alloys Institute. He received his second Masters degree in Materials Engineering from the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada.

Geltser will directly report to David A. Wolfort, Chief Operating Officer. His responsibilities will include spearheading corporate-wide process re-engineering initiatives, insuring efficient management of order processing and manufacturing across our facilities, and participating in the development of business strategy.
