Working for Wishes Background

Olympic Steel’s company-wide partnership with The Make-A-Wish Foundation began in 2004 as part of the company’s 50 th Anniversary celebration. Olympic employees selected the organization with the hope of granting a single wish, a $5,000 commitment.  That first year, the company’s four-week fund-raising efforts, supported by approximately 900 employees from 11 separate operating locations, far exceeded the initial goal, granting three wishes with a campaign total of $17,500.  With such overwhelming success, Olympic Steel’s annual Working for Wishes campaign was born.

As of 2009, Olympic Steel employees donated a cumulative total of $178,800 and granted 32 identified wishes to various chapters of the Make-A-Wish Foundation local to company operating facilities.  The 2010 campaign is scheduled to take place throughout the month of July.

Other Charitable Causes
Each year, Olympic Steel's divisions sponsor a number of initiatives in support of local charitable causes.  In 2009, Olympic employees took citizenship to a new level, pushing past economic challenges to generously support  more than 56 different charitable causes.  In total, employees raised over $42,500 and donated 779+ hours of volunteer service, 869+ pounds of food, more than a truckload of clothing, 105 units of blood, and various other needed items.

Organizations supported by this extraordinary effort included the Alzheimers Association, American Heart Association, American Red Cross, Cell Phones for Soldiers, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Coats for Kids, Harvest for Hunger, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Ronald McDonald House, United Way, and Women in Need, as well as numerous local community charities.
